Completion and building modifications and extension of building No. 52 – Palacký University in Olomouc
Recently, we participated in the reconstruction and completion of the operational-administrative building No. 52 of the Faculty of Science at Palacký University in Olomouc. The two-storey building was no longer satisfactory in terms of technical, operational, as well as aesthetic aspects. Thanks to the construction work, the building has been modernized and fits better into the concept of the entire enclosed university campus.
Building No. 52 serves the Technical Support and Building Management Department. However, as it was not in a satisfactory condition in the long term, it was renovated and completed. In the building with two floors and partially with a basement, of a rectangular ground plan, and located approximately in the middle of the premises of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University in Olomouc, we underlined the new functional content of the building with all the building modifications.
We added a two-storey extension to the north side at the entrance as well as to the east side at the corner. Thus we managed to suppress the symmetry with the central pilaster of the existing object. We also created a smooth transition between the different street lines of neighboring buildings.
As part of the reconstruction, we removed the greenhouses that were located along the south side of the building. Instead, we used about a third of the area for a one-floor extension. The rest was left to create rest zones seamlessly connected to the nearby park.
Concerning the whole area in which the building is set, we also used plants and other natural elements. For example, we have added part of the northern windowless facade with ornamental climber plants. We also added a green roof above the operating ground floor on the south side. We used gravel for the surface finish of the roof above the two-storey part.
On the northern side towards the pedestrian zone, we highlighted the entrance that slightly stands out from the facade. This created a sheltered leeward with bike racks. We also emphasized the input of the selected materials. We lined a part of the entrance with brown cement-fiber facade panels. These boards, however, in anthracite color, have also been used for the interconnecting inter-fenestral pillars, and for the leeward of the ground floor operating part. We highlighted the windows with anthracite aluminum frames in anthracite.
In the reconstructed building, there are now, apart from offices, also workshops of the building management department, and facilities for the employees of the premises.
