NEW ARCHIVE FOR PALACKÝ UNIVERSITY IN OLOMOUC
We are delighted to have contributed to the exciting project of building a new archive for Palacký University in Olomouc. The design of the new archive building mirrors the floor plan of the original structure from the 1980s, but with modern updates. The building spans four above-ground floors, offering state-of-the-art spaces for secure archive storage, as well as multifunctional rooms and research areas open to the public
The architectural design of the building integrates elements of traditional university architecture with characteristics typical of silos and warehouses, reflecting the dual themes of archiving and storage while conveying the dignity and seriousness associated with academia. The facades combine suspended slabs of glazed brick ceramics, structural glazing, and pre-weathered titanium-zinc in an anthracite finish. The fragmented brick motif draws inspiration from baroque fortresses, symbolizing stability and permanence.
The first two floors are dedicated to archival storage, which is why the facade at this level has very few windows. Windows are only placed on the south side, in the archivists’ offices.
The third floor is open to the public and features stunning views of the surrounding area, along with a research room, conference room, and a multifunctional space. Visitors will also find restrooms, staff offices, and a spacious reference library. The building is designed to be transparent to the street, creating a connection between the research center’s activities and the life outside.
The archive building has two separate entrances—one for the public and another for employees. Two elevators serve these entrance areas for accessibility. The interiors are tailored to meet the building’s functional needs, including a high-capacity archive system with sliding shelves and fixed shelving units in storage areas.
The top floor is primarily dedicated to the building’s technical infrastructure, housing air conditioning equipment, a gas boiler room, and a space for the photovoltaic system’s electrical switchboards, which may be added in the future.
