Reconstruction of Food Technology Laboratories – Tomas Bata University
We have recently completed the reconstruction of laboratories for Tomas Bata University in Zlín. The second underground floor of building U2 was modified to establish top laboratories and high-quality facilities for the students and employees of the Department of Food Technology of the Faculty of Technology at TBU. The area, which can hold up to 100 people, corresponds to the strict regulations of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.
The building, owned by the University, is situated in the center of Zlín. Since the modifications were modifications inside the object, there was no need to change the external appearance of the building. The reinforced concrete structure of the building from 1991 also proved to be perfectly functional. There was no need to intervene here, either.
We rebuilt the interior to create a pleasant, aesthetic, and at the same time maximum functional workplace. In addition to the laboratories for the production of food of plant and animal origin, new workplaces for chemical, microbiological, physical, and sensory analysis of raw materials and foodstuffs were established. We also built appropriate storage, dressing, technological, and social facilities. When selecting materials and all construction work, we took care to ensure high hygienic and safety conditions. These include, for example, washability of floors and walls, or adequate ventilation of rooms, including their air conditioning.
During the reconstruction, we had to demolish both inner holes and all non-loadbearing partition walls. The existing equipment was also dismantled, and the ceramic tiles on the walls were removed. The new internal partition and wall partitions are made of ceramic blocks lined with mortar. The bearing walls are formed from acoustic brick blocks. We used the PUR floorboards protected by the PE foil for flooring, and cement screed with reinforcement nets. We placed a floor layer made of an epoxy floor coating system with a non-slip surface finish and a coefficient of friction of min. 0.6 in the utility rooms and the cooling compartments. We used the ground mineral fiber reinforced screed under the coating system.
