A library for the Statutory City of Havířov

The municipal councilors in Havířov had decided to utilize the unused part of an administrative building for the purposes of cultural events. Our aim was to reconstruct the uninhabited place and turn it into a town library that would be pleasant for all book-lovers. The library as one of the wings of the building became a part of the administrative complex of the Administrative Centre of the Town of Havířov.

The implementation was completed in 2011

The reconstruction provided high-quality and effective use of the space for necessary purposes of the library. The seat of the library – wing G – was equipped with a new barrier-free entrance for the disabled – we installed a glass elevator with a steel shaft which we implemented into the current building after demolishing of the floor structures. The bathrooms as well as the entire background were also adapted to the needs of the people with limited mobility. We did not either forget the youngest ones – the future readers for who a new colorful children playroom was built.

The library was in the overall lightened by large opening windows. It was in addition supplied with the ventilation, air-conditioning and cooling for the readers to maximally enjoy the comfort when visiting the library during hot summer days. Therefore we paid enough attention to the comfort and convenience of the large reading room where many visitors spend long hours. Its clean and simple design does not interfere with concentrating reading and/or studying in the contrary the calm ambience of the library is thus emphasised. More natural light at the entrances into the individual sections were ensured by the installation of skylights on the roof of the building.

The complete reconstruction was conducted with only environmentally friendly materials. Altogether we created a workplace for 25 employees in the administration as well as in the individual departments. The space was divided so that readers could clearly orient from the early childhood to the eldest: in total the library saves 55000 books, out of which 10000 are in the children section, in the adult section there are 30000 books and 15000 titles in the music and art section.
