Svítání Basic and Practical School is located in the historical center of Pardubice. This corner building, a cultural monument since 1958, has its south side facing Komenský Square towards the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Then on the east side to Klášterní street.
The three-story building with an inner courtyard was extensively devastated by insensitive interventions during the socialist period. As part of the reconstruction, which is inspired by the original form of the building from the end of the 19th century, we have restored the division of the facade with cornices and strip bossage. We chose sandstone slabs for the plinths and restored stucco decorations to the cornices.
As the building is used for theoretical teaching and practical training of pupils with physical and mental disabilities, the layout corresponds to its aim. In addition to spaces for regular classes, the reconstruction and extension also include, for example, two apartments for practicing daily activities and possibly for temporary accommodation for graduates. Barrier-free access to the building and barrier-free solutions for individual spaces are provided.
During the reconstruction, we covered the original courtyard with a gable roof with glazing, and it will now serve as a hall. By demolishing the parapets of the arcades of the cloister, we restored the function of the Court of Eden. We then added an elevator shaft tube to the yard, connecting all floors. On the second above-ground floor, we placed the dining room, facilities for employees, and the teachers’ offices and offices of the school management. The Special Pedagogical Center will also function here separately. We turned the attic into two residential units for living training. The premises also include, for example, a training laundry and a kitchen.
